History
The lower trail head of Apex Park has been a center of activity for more than 6,000 years. A number of archeological digs have taken place to the north of the kiosk and restroom.
The Apex and Gregory Wagon Toll Road once lead to the gold fields of Central City and Leadville, hence the Sluice-box, Grubstake, and Pick n, Sledge trail names. In 1864 there was a small town, Apex City, near the lower trail head.
The land that comprises the 700 Acres of Apex Park was acquired by Jefferson County Open Space through a donation and several land purchases made since in 1974.
